Knowing the current situation of llamas has deeply impacted me, awakening in me and my team the need to tell their story. With the film "The Call of the Llama", we will raise awareness about the plight of llamas and llama-raising families in Peru, seeking to discover and show the reasons behind the decline of their population.
"The Call of the Llamas" is a documentary about the history and value of the llama in the Andes, its relationship with breeders, the threats to its population in Peru, and the innovation in its uses and breeding in other countries, highlighting the importance of protecting this iconic species.
The llama, a characteristic South American camelid native to the Andes, is the story’s protagonist, which spans over 5,000 years. As is well known, its role has been fundamental in developing the great Andean civilization. It is impossible to explain the technological, social, and economic development across such a vast and challenging geography without the intervention of the llama.
The Call of the Llamas will highlight the problems affecting the survival of this species, its positive impact on the ecosystem, its relevance in preserving ancient cultural traditions, its relationship with breeders, and the new economic uses being developed in other countries.
The United Nations declared 2024 as the International Year of Camelids, recognizing the cultural significance these animals hold for many communities around the world. They are considered a key resource for the livelihood of thousands of households in more than ninety countries.
With “The Call of the Llamas”, we will discover the problems affecting the survival of this species, its positive impact on the ecosystem, its relevance in preserving Andean cultural traditions, its special relationship with Andean breeders, and the new economic uses that have been attributed to it in other countries and that could be replicated in ours.
